북한의 이 주장은 기본합의서 파괴는 물론이거니와 그 보다는 한반도 휴전체제에 대한 심각한 도전이기도 하다. 북한의 일방적인 NLL 라인 폐기 주장은 1953년 한반도 전쟁의 휴전 이전 상태로 돌아가자는 억지이며 이는 휴전협정 위반 일뿐만 아니라 유엔에 대한 도전이다.
한반도 휴전협정은 유엔군, 미군, 중국 인민군, 북한이 공동 서명한 협정이다.
그런 협정을 북한이 일방적으로 폐기한다고 폐기되는 것은 아니다. 휴전협정을 파기하려면 휴전협정 당사국 대표들이 판문점에서 만나 파기 선언을 먼저 해야 한다.
그런 사실을 알면서도 북한이 그런 협박을 하는 것은 북한이 흔히 사용하는 ‘벼랑 끝 전술’에 불과하다. 이제 한국은 북한의 그런 전술에 더 이상 속지 않아도 된다.
